LAUNCH OF NEW LAL CD: LET US BEGIN. IT HAS BEGUN.
[caption id="attachment_175" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="A section of the comic-book style poster which acts as the CD holder"] [/caption] Delighted. Really, the perfect word to describe this feeling is ‘delighted’. To watch the planting of a seed, to see it being watered with such attention and care, and then to finally see the flower bloom can only be described as delightful. Rosina Kazi told me LAL was working on a new album almost two years ago. (Two years ago!?!?). The idea was this: imagine a year, any year. we live in ghettos. borders, chec
updates from Sarajevo
We’ve had a busy summer at Colaboratorium. Seeking inspiration and a change of scenery, Barcelona-based Andreea spent a month in a city she dearly loves: Sarajevo. However, the pace of change in the city shocked her. Old markets were giving way to McDonald’s and anonymously sleek shopping megacentres. She found solace for her concerns in the photographic collaboration with Sarajevo-based photographer Nino Jovišić. Chasing the sun and the disappearing Sarajevo they once knew, Nino and Andreea sought to tell the stories of the spirit of the city. The spirit that
CONSTRUCTING COMMUNITY OUT OF A MESSY PUBLIC AND A BIT OF CHANCE
Originally published in Hiše magazine, March 2011 Your closest friends, your current and former lovers, were all once strangers to you. Maybe you studied at the same coffee shop during university. Maybe you lived in the same neighbourhood and kept running into each other on the street. Maybe you were both into skateboarding and met at the abandoned-pool-turned-skatepark. Whatever the particularities of the story, repetitive chance encounters are what form the basis of relationships. As architects and planners concerned with community building, our instinct is to ma
DECONSTRUCTING GENDER IN DAMASCUS
[caption id="attachment_76" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Noura Murad, Artistic Director of Leish Troupe"][/caption] At the moment I met Noura Murad in Damascus in the summer of 2008, I was struggling with the invisible signs my body was sending out without my explicit approval. I was born 1492km and three border crossings away, so physically I didn’t look all that different. However, people kept stopping me on the street to welcome me to Damascus. And so I stopped and I observed. The first thing I noticed was that in terms of clothing (costumes?
